How one good habit led to another

Back during the middle of the pandemic, I was lost.

I was so mentally broke I remember sleeping 20 hours, eating something, then going back to sleep for another 20.

I could really tell my health had gone broke. I could barely move but knew I needed to start something, even the smallest habit that could get me up.

3 years have passed and I could never imagine how far I could come from that small habit I started.

Sticking to just 1 good habit leads to more good habits

At the time, I read that one small habit and sticking to it is what I needed to do, but I doubted that just one habit could change anything. But there really wasn't anything I could do. We were all locked down as well. So I played a HIIT exercise video on Youtube and told myself I could sleep 20 more hours if I finish just one exercise a day.

No need to go outside. I can do it beside my bed.

For a few days, it was really one exercise, eat, then go back to sleep. But sticking to that somehow led to another small action, then another... and another.

There were days when I would want to continue the exercise that automatically plays after the video ends. I remember I was so out of shape I needed to skip some of the moves but it got better.

Then it led me to add more habits over the past three years.

  • Sleeping early and rising early
  • Walking 10,000 steps/day
  • Live on a surplus every month(Income>Spending)
  • Invest 30,000JPY/month
  • Learn a language on Duolingo everyday
  • Eating mekabu seaweed everyday
  • Tweeting everyday about finance
  • Read a quote everyday
Like I said earlier, I could never imagine I would come this far the day I thought just one small habit would lead to this outcome.
  • My investment has grown to more than 400,000JPY in a year.
  • My weight has decreased from 104kg during the pandemic to 82kg.
  • I'm in better mood and it's a lot more stable than before.

Keeping and adding good habits while trashing the bad ones

It's ideal if only good habits stick, but bad ones do as well.

The bad ones that I could think of right now were:
  • Watching Youtube videos too much
  • drinking and snacking
  • long commute and night shifts
Bad habits come from wrong decisions and too much stress.

Then like good habits, bad habits lead to another bad habit, then another...

To have a good life, is not very difficult. Stick to good habits, and get rid of the bad ones.

Good habits lead to good results. Good results give you a good mood. A good mood gives you good relationships.

But it's not a problem to try new things and find out. The important thing is that I reflect on my actions and find out which are good and bad.

Keep the good habits, add better ones as you go, and trash the bad ones by reflecting on it every once in awhile.

You can't suddenly hop on the summit of a mountain

Good habits have to go step by step.

Right now I keep having thoughts that I want to start a business food related or education related, but it cannot be done instantly.

What I can do is to add more good habits of tweeting what I learned everyday food and education related.

Reading about it. Blogging what I learned.

And the compounding of that will lead to more outcomes and gets me closer to what I want to do.

Thanks for reading:)

Thanks for reading the content👋

In the blog I will share things I learned especially about finance and self development.

Japanese are relatively good savers when it comes to money, and I've been realizing it comes from good habits and mindsets that anyone can learn.

So, over time I'd like to share what I learned, and hope to learn from you, too.
